Warm up to winter

Monteith’s invites you to experience the taste of winter with Monteith’s Winter Ale, an enlivening six per cent beer with distinct warming properties, brewed especially for the colder months.
Available as a seasonal release for only the second time, Monteith’s Winter Ale is developed using a range of five premium malts, with hints of spicy cinnamon resulting in a rich, bold malty flavour and velvety smoothness.
Monteith’s master brewer Barrie Calder says “Winter Ale’s cinnamon flavour provides the warming characteristics to this beer, while premium quality Nelson hops help to exude its spicy, yet flora aroma. When poured, a creamy collar of foam will form to create a look true to this style of beer.” Calder says, Monteith's Winter Ale is best served at a slightly warmer temperature to enhance the aroma and flavour characteristics of the brew. 8-10 degrees is recommended.
“We’re pleased to be able to offer Winter Ale again this year as it proved so popular last winter with beer drinkers”, says Phillipa Cameron Monteith’s brand manager. “We received many requests for the brew long after the limited supplies ran out.”
“Part of our quest to give New Zealander’s the best beer experiences is our search for classic beer styles that are perfect for the season and the Kiwi palate. We think we have found this combination with our Winter Ale” she says.
And it seems the judges agree, the Monteith’s Winter Ale picked up a bronze medal at the International Brewing Awards in Brussels.
Monteith’s Winter Ale is available from selected supermarkets, liquor retailers and exclusively on tap at Monteith’s concept bars from May 15th onwards.
Suggested food match:
We recommend matching the Monteith’s Winter Ale with a Traditional roast rump of beef with a chilli chocolate glaze.
Note: Using the rump is important as it needs to be a robust cut of meat. The glaze should be made in two stages: Make a traditional jus with beef stock. Separately make a secondary jus with a miropoix of vegetables, chilli to taste and a small quantity of beef stock. Add to this two heaped tablespoons of brown sugar and allow to caramelise gently. Strain and add to the primary jus. Add the grated dark cooking chocolate to the jus just prior to serving.
